There is some staining on the cream squares (I believe some combination of on the paper and on the glass)

it's also just a great looking object--this one with boxed end stained green

but I'm pretty certain scorekeeping that was their original purpose--perhaps they tracked balls and strikes

Quite a sweet disposition nonetheless, with a smile on his funny little face, wide triangular nose that makes him look a bit like a scarecrow, and flat hat that makes him look a bit like a scholar!
